Speech at Ecotrust, May 15, 2012

Many thanks to everyone who came to our Primary Election party on May 15. Several folks asked me to post the John Wooden quotes from my speech, so here it is;

Thank you to:

God, especially for looking after me on those nights when I was Driving While Exhausted.

More than 1,000 people who gave $5 - $50, some both in 2011 and 2012
Union supporters, particularly those brave enough to give me their sole endorsement - Communication Workers of America, Oregon Nurses Association, United Food and Commercial Workers.
Elected leaders, Nick Fish, Dan Saltzman, Sam Adams, the entire Multnomah County Board, Sheriff Dan Staton, State Representative Lew Frederick

My beloved mentor Gretchen Kafoury, who has been an inspiration and guide for me for years.
My friend Storm Large, currently touring with Pink Martini in Europe. People who know me well understand my dislike of Candidates Gone Wild, This year, I looked forward to it, because when I asked Storm Large to help me, she didn't hesitate, just said "Of course!". The video has been viewed over 300 times. I suspect at least 250 of those views are by me.

Quotes from basketball coaching great John Wooden, many learned by Luke and Maxwell due to Concordia Basketball Coach Brad Barberick's inspirational leadership at Rip City Summer Basketball camps:

Your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are.

Never make excuses. Your friends don't need them, and your enemies won't believe them.

Success is peace of mind which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you did your best to become the best you are capable of becoming.

It is amazing how much can be accomplished if no one cares who gets the credit.

Leadership is the ability to get individuals to work together for the common good and the best possible results while at the same time letting them know they did it themselves.

There is nothing stronger than gentleness.

The best thing a father can do for his children is to love their mother.

The main ingredient of stardom is the rest of the team.

Things work out best for those who make the best of the way things work out.

In life, worthwhile accomplishments and acquisitions take time. Usually the better the reward, the more time it takes to acquire it.

“Remember this your lifetime through:
Tomorrow there will be more to do.
And failure waits for all who stay
With some success made yesterday.
Tomorrow you must try once more,
And even harder than before.”

My last quote was from William Booth: This and better we'll do.
